Office Chairs-Manufacturers Adopt Advanced Technologies to Tap High-end Market

With efforts to elevate manufacturing caliber over the past few years, Taiwan`s manufacturers of office chairs have been successful wheeling their chairs into relatively more sophisticated fields besides the furniture arena, such as transportation vehicle and medical equipment.

Some domestic manufacturers have developed office chairs that can better support the spinal column during prolonged sitting; while some have built into office chairs high-tech materials that resist the built-up of bacteria.

A veteran manufacturer here says that domestic suppliers generally agree that it is high time for Taiwan`s furniture sector to upgrade products as competitors from developing nations are strong enough to make inroads into the upmarket segments worldwide.

Domestic furniture manufacturers are mostly medium and small firms who have learned to apply for government subsidies to support their R&D, which will help to speed up developing innovative products.

Posture-protecting Chairs

Well-Run Technology Co., established in 1976, is a leading manufacturer of furniture parts and office furniture in Taiwan. Not only building comfortable, ergonomic, and space-saving computer office furniture, the company also upgrades and expands the existing line to meet the growing and ever-changing demands of the global market.

The newest series of office chairs are designed to maintain good posture, with the backs of the chair that tilt forward to 85 degrees to better support the lumbar vertebra during extended sitting, hence reducing fatigue or even injury.

The company claims it has been successful in developing elastic fiberglass mesh for office chairs that better support the lumbar vertebra to minimize injury. The elastic fiberglass mesh, which resists bacteria, has to be imported from industrialized nations like the U.S. and Japan.

Realizing the potential multifunctionality of the elastic fiberglass mesh, the company has applied it to not only office chairs but also electric scooters. Recently they received a NT$2.5 million (US$75,750 at US$1:NT$33) subsidy from the Industrial Development Bureau under the Ministry of Economic Affairs to develop multi-functional materials for furniture, transportation vehicles, and even medical equipment.

Originally the company made only furniture parts; but a decade ago it decided to diversify into producing furniture suites, especially chairs for offices and public places. They generally turn out items of plastics, steel, and medium-density fibers, but can deliver according to customer specifications.

Unlike other domestic producers who have moved offshore to take advantage of cheaper costs in neighboring developing nations, Well-Run has not uprooted from its hometown and adheres to human-centered management. "We offer lucrative fringe-benefits to our workers, hoping they will devote themselves to producing first-grade products," says president Tony Yang.

Ever since inception, the company has consistently streamlined production and procured cost-efficient materials to control costs. "Our long-term efforts to cut production costs means we are one of a few domestic manufacturers able to offer price-competitive products worldwide. Without compromising quality, we also employ strict quality-control procedures to ensure the finest products."

"R&D is an essential part of our dedication to developing highly competitive products," asserts Yang. "In the unpredictable business world, manufacturers in this field have to work harder than ever to create innovative products to attract and keep customers."

Most of the in-house R&D specialists have over eight years of experience in developing innovative furniture, with some having traveled to Japan to learn sophisticated techniques in designing multi-functional furniture, especially office desks and chairs.

Yang says that the R&D team works with computer technology, product design, production efficiency enhancement, and market analysis, while capable of developing 10 items a year. The company claims that 20 of its overall workforce are involved in R&D to make innovations.

Currently, Well-Run`s product range is divided into five categories, including office chair, computer desk, office desk, chair parts, and electric scooter. "Many of our products are patented in Taiwan and some industrialized nations," says Yang.

With annual revenues reaching US$8 million, the company currently focuses on knock-down computer furniture, office chairs, compact-disc storage cases, and multi-purpose racks. With a work force of 136, the company is currently capable of rolling out 28,000 chairs and 60,000 computer desks, among others, per month.

In 1998, the company won the coveted Golden Medal presented by the Taiwan Consumers Association, and ever since the company has managed to win awards at home and abroad each year.

Well-Run currently exports 90% of its total output, with Europe and the U.S. taking half of the company`s total exports, Asia 20%, Australia 10%, and the other areas the remaining 10%. Seeing the fast growth of the China market, over the past year the company has been setting up marketing channels in Shanghai and Beijing.

Patented Chairs

Shiang Ye Industrial Co., Ltd., founded in 1978, is one of Taiwan`s most professional manufacturers of furniture desks and chairs for a wide range of applications, with all the products made in Taiwan with sophisticated manufacturing techniques.

Originally focusing on the production of steel office chairs, the company has diversified over the years into other product lines.

Currently, the company`s major products are folding chair, outdoor chair, stacking chair, conference chair, swivel chair, waiting chair, university chair, and related accessories.

Since its establishment, Shiang Ye has paid much attention to R&D. With an in-house R&D department, the company is capable of designing and producing original, innovative products, which has helped it to secure a solid niche in the ever-changing global marketplace.

Skilled R&D technicians have expertise in mold design, tooling, sampling, and production efficiency enhancement. Its strong R&D department is currently capable of completely developing a new product line in three to four months.

The ISO9001-certified company runs two production facilities measuring 7,200 square meters. Tech & Q Furniture Ltd. is a dedicated manufacturer of stacking chairs, office chairs, public seating, and related parts. Realizing the importance of proper posture to human health, the company is focused on the development of ergonomic office-automation (OA) chairs.

With a modern manufacturing plant in Fangyuan, Changhua County of central Taiwan, the company is capable of delivering chairs crafted with precision and quality, as well as paying attention to aesthetics and ergonomic factors. All the products are tested according to the ANSI/IFMA standards.

"To design a perfectly-ergonomic chair, we must delve into the anatomical kinetics," comments Liu Huang-chang, president of the company. "As sitting is dynamic, with people frequently shifting, moving, stretching, twisting while in a chair, few can remain in the same position for a long period. Traditional ergonomic chairs have the drawback of providing support statically; but the Dynaflex-series offer dynamic support of the lower back, providing support from any angle, any position at any time."

"Ergonomics is the science of human at work. So turning out ergonomic furniture involves developing new ideas and technologies to improve working conditions, efficiency, and productivity," says Liu.

"I developed this innovative series of chairs to relieve human back pains resulting from prolonged sitting, especially in offices," explains Liu. "Working in this age of computers, people spend amazingly long hours in front of the PC for fun and work. So it`s very important to sit in ergonomically-efficient chairs to minimize fatigue resulting from pressure on the spine."

Liu says he has long observed why office workers are prone to headaches and back pains. "After consultations with an osteopath, I designed a dynamic seat back that is controlled by a specially-designed fastener," says Liu. "The osteopath has certified that our Dynaflex-series chairs can effectively support the back to relieve back pains."

The Dynaflex-series chairs were displayed at the Tokyo International Furniture Show at the end of October last year for the first time ever. "We drew much attention from Japanese buyers and received major orders on-the-spot," says Liu. "We will promote the products at the Orgatec Show this October. It will be the first time for us to showcase our Dynamic-series at a world-class trade fair for office furniture in Europe."

Tech & Q says its Dynamic-series is patented in Japan, which is the major market targeted for the chairs currently. After showing the new product line at the Orgatec, the company will step up its efforts to explore the global market.

"As European consumers value the ergonomic features in selecting various furniture, I believe our Dynaflex-series chairs will be a big draw at Orgatec," says Liu. "To my knowledge, most consumers in Germany and Italy consider ergonomics before worrying about price, so it is critical that furniture makes them feel comfortable. The Dynaflex-series fits the bill perfectly."

Liu notes the Dynaflex-series chairs are suitable for office workers around the world. "Good furniture featuring ergonomic design are welcome by office workers anywhere," explains Liu. "Of course, we can tailor the Dynaflex-series to meet specific demands to fit into various customs, cultural preferences and habits."

The company claims it cuts no corners to develop sophisticated molds for the production of ergonomic chairs. "Only precision molds can meet the specifications of the original design," says Liu. "That`s why we rely on in-house-built molds to turn out products since our establishment a decade ago." For instance, over the past one and a half years we have spent NT$300,000 (US$9,090) to modify the mold for the Dynaflex-series, considering that the mold`s fabrication costs is only NT$500,000 (US$15,150).

"I never think about return-on-investment since I began producing OA chairs a decade ago," says Liu. "I`ve been dedicated to developing products that effectively help workers to relieve back pain and boost productivity."

Customized, Innovative Products

Welltrust Industries Co., Ltd., one of Taiwan`s leading manufacturers of office automation (OA) furniture located in Tainan City of southern Taiwan, is stepping up the establishment of an international sales center in the Tainan Technology Industrial Park, where the proposed center will also accommodate a R&D and production facility to specialize in producing customized and innovative products.

Charly Lin, managing director of Welltrust, says he was motivated to launch the center due to the drastic changes in the global furniture market. "In the past, domestic manufacturers of furniture could be profitable by just focusing on production and shipping finished products overseas," Lin explains. "In recent years, many of them have moved production offshore to nations providing cheap labor to retain price-sensitive customers and keep costs down. But some big buyers are still looking for high-quality and innovative products in Taiwan, sourcing products featuring brand-new styles. And I believe only the domestic manufacturers can meet such upscale demands."

To ensure that all of its products meet high quality standards, the company has invested heavily in cutting-edge design software and high-precision inspection instruments. The ISO9001-certified OA furniture manufacturer has a quality-control team to inspect products at every stages of the manufacturing process, from raw materials to finished products.

Welltrust was founded 15 years ago as a trading company and transformed into a manufacturer in 1996. Currently the company concentrates on the production of OA furniture, especially office chairs/desks, workstations and computer chairs with innovative designs, and related components. The company is capable of rolling out OA furniture made of genuine and synthetic leather, fabric, wood, plastics and metal, depending on customers` requirements. It is capable of designing molds with its in-house R&D technicians, with fabrication work subcontracted to specialist mold makers.

Lin says Taiwan is an ideal place to source materials and components for the production of OA office furniture. "Taiwan has strong peripheral industries to supply metal and plastic parts," Lin comments. "Currently we source 90% of our materials in Taiwan, with the remaining 10% coming from Italy and mainland China."

To set itself apart from other furniture manufacturers, Welltrust is constantly designing unique products that are patented, such as an adjustable office-chair armrest and a swivel-chair support structure, both of which are patented in mainland China.

With its own brand `Welltrust,` the company is not rushing to build brand profile in the international arena. Lin explains "We are now enhancing pre- and after-sale services. And I know that the establishment of brand recognition is based on the value of products." Despite having its own brand, Welltrust began accepting OEM orders from the U.S. and Europe some seven years ago.

The company regularly introduces three new items on a quarterly basis. It also develops products based on customer specifications, generally within one to two weeks, while many of its innovative products are patented in both Taiwan and mainland China.

Lin says an OA furniture manufacturer has to cultivate flexible design abilities to meet the fast-changing demand of the small-office, home-office (SOHO) workers in the electronic era. In other words, makers of OA chairs should be able to turn out products that appeal to both office and SOHO workers," Lin comments. (By BEN SHEN)
